Degrees and Certifications:
6 years at Velt B.A. English M.S. Education Concentration in Special Education
Mr. Ben Starkey
Mr. Starkey is entering his seventh year with Roosevelt. He received his B.A. in English in 2005 but continued working in retail management before taking a position with Opportunity Enterprises in Valparaiso in 2011. There he found his passion for working with differently abled individuals. When an opportunity to teach Special Education at Roosevelt presented itself, he took the leap into working in the self-contained Special Education classroom.
After several years in the classroom Mr. Starkey decided to return to school himself to pursue his M.S. Education which he completed in May of 2018. With his new degree and licensing Mr. Starkey moved into a new role as an ELA Co-Teacher, Alternative Education Co-Teacher, and resource room instructor where he gets to help the entire spectrum of students at Roosevelt.
Mr. Starkey is married thirteen years with two children, two crazy dogs, and one obnoxious cat. A self-proclaimed nerd, he hopes to expand club offerings in pop culture and gaming. Plans for outings with the students to help them broaden their horizons and experience new opportunities, some as close as right over the Illinois border, he will collaborate with like-minded teachers and administration to accomplish these goals.
